To harvest one first has to plant!

ClethraIn the fall of 2008 I was shopping for bargains and chose an unfamiliar clethra: Clethra alnifolia ‘Sherry Sue’.  It was pretty, with reddish-pink stems.  And supposedly fragrant.

Well, it sat there for several years, not doing much to impress me, though still a pretty shrub for that shady spot.

Whatever conditions were right for it this year—or maybe it had simply settled in—-it has bloomed like crazy this fall.  And I am delighted with it’s light fragrance as it drifts across the back yard.  A bit late for the harvest of this baby, as it took five years, but hopefully, it’ll continue over time to delight me in my Octobers to come.  And really, what a treat.  Here’s to taking chances and then waiting for the bounty!ycgt_blog_post_graphic (1)

This New Guinea impatien was a winner

Often as I shop for plants I come across a specimen that is just too pretty to pass up.  That was the case this spring while “looking around” for various clients.

Linda likes pink so when I saw this striped version of a New Guinea I grabbed a dozen.  And boy, not only did they look good through the summer but they look great now!  Really makes the difference in mid-September to see these spots of joy.  Hope to find it again next year.   Linda was happy with this plant—and that makes all the difference.pinkandwhiteNewGuineasept3

YCGT—a late summer bouquet

In late August and early September, many people look at their gardens and see a sea of green.  Boring!!!!!   And why?  Because they haven’t planted those awesome annuals that are bursting with color right now.  And those perennials that are fall favorites?   Shrubs?  Hydrangeas, buddleia, hostas, rudbeckia, sedum—-I can go on and on.

Here’s a bouquet that I  quickly gathered for the church this week.latesummerbouquet1latesummerbouquet   I went with subtle tones but I could easily have punched it up with the more vibrant colors available from my gardens.

Here we have grass fronds, verbena bonariensis, persicaria, tall ageratum, buddleia, rue, joe-pye weed, hydrangea, artemisia- –a mixture of shrubs, perennials and annuals.

Plan for your seasonal bouquets.  You can grow that—-splendor in the late summer.   Enjoy this beautiful, bountiful time of year.

Vaccinium ‘Sunshine Blue’—-in a pot

I have a small property and I have just begun to think more about plants for FOOD.  So I bought a Sunshine Blue blueberry bush and now it awaits its permanent placement. (Pending construction).  Of course, I quickly lost most of the fruit to squirrels!  Netting next year.ycgt_blog_post_graphic (1)Sunshine Blue blueberry bush

Tonight, after a heavy rain, the air soft and a need to garden, I planted the Sunshine Blue in a pot, to help it along.  This plant is small enough that it could remain in the pot, should I chose.  I think it is much happier today.  I know I am.
